The Old Globe

Over the past two decades, The Old Globe has been the source of premiere productions that have garnered numerous awards and international acclaim. Most recently, The Old Globe presented the world premieres of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, starring John Lithgow and Norbert Leo Butz, Nora Ephron's Imaginary Friends, starring Swoosie Kurtz and Cherry Jones (both directed by Jack O'Brien), and Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All, starring Ellen Burstyn.

In Season 2000, the Terrence McNally-David Yazbek musical, The Full Monty, directed by Jack O’Brien, broke box office records at The Old Globe and went on to successful runs on Broadway and in the West End.

The Old Globe has also been host to a number of other world premieres, including Tina Howe's Pride’s Crossing, directed by Jack O'Brien; Play On!, a musical featuring the work of Duke Ellington, conceived and directed by former Associate Artistic Director Sheldon Epps, which had a Broadway run in 1997; the Stephen Sondheim-George Furth comedy-thriller, Getting Away with Murder, which opened at The Old Globe in 1995 and traveled to Broadway, under Jack O'Brien's direction, in 1996.

O'Brien's 1993 revival of Damn Yankees, starring Bebe Neuwirth and Victor Garber, played an extended, sold-out run at The Old Globe prior to its 1994-95 Broadway run (four Tony nominations) and subsequent national and international tours.

Neil Simon has premiered Rumors and Jake’s Women at The Old Globe and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright August Wilson has brought three of his newest works to The Old Globe prior to their Broadway openings, including Joe Turner’s Come and Gone and Two Trains Running.
